Elio Grasso 2006 Barolo
Ginestra Casa Maté
The vineyards of Elio Grasso are situated in some of the best land in all of Piemonte. The vineyard Ginestra is a fabulous site for Nebbiolo, due to its perfect exposition, facing due south, and its limestone-based soil. The Ginestra displays spicy red fruit, and on the palate, it is rich, generous and smooth, with a layered texture. It finishes with substantial sweet, dusty tannins and has excellent length. Terrific Barolo, one for the ages, and the cellar.

It is hard to put into words the overwhelming quality of this Second Grand Cru Classé. The wine is an absolute classic. Dark cassis, leather, tobacco and black cherries on the nose, with mouth-filling black fruits, firm tannins, an incredible balance of fruit and acidity, and a finish that goes on for minutes, not seconds.

This wine is one that tends to need 5 to 10 years of aging, or a long time in a decanter, before it can express its beautiful floral character, a bouquet of iris and white lilacs with a touch of raspberries. The wine is impressively powerful and hearty, full of energy, but with no sign of over-ripeness. There is no doubt about its exceptional aging potential, but I only insist on patience to those who are more inclined towards finesse than power, as it is drinking beautifully today.
